Cuban Gets the Gold at World Judo Cup

HAVANA TIMES, Feb 27 — Cuban judoka Idalis Ortiz won the gold medal on Sunday at the World Judo Cup in Warsaw, where athletes from the island won also silver and bronze medals, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

Ortiz defeated the Polish fighter Sadkowska Ursula by one wazari in over-78-kilogram division of after winning in the semifinal against Frenchman Mathe Kitty by an ippon.

Meanwhile, Yaritza Abel (63 kg) was overcome in the final against French athlete Gevrise Emane,  as Yanet Bermoy (52 kg) fell by one ippon against Italian Forciniti Rosalba, leaving the Cubans with silver and bronze medals in those respective weight classifications.

The Cuban team wound up in third place in the event, which was won by France with two golds and two bronzes, followed by North Korea with two golds.
