Guatemala Regrets its Bay of Pigs Role

HAVANA TIMES, Feb. 18 — Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom apologized to Cuba on Tuesday for his country’s role in the US-backed Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961. The BBC noted that the CIA “used Guatemalan territory to train Cuban exiles before their disastrous invasion which was quickly defeated by Cuban forces.” Speaking at the University of Havana, Colom stated: “Cuba deserves its own destiny, a destiny that you all built with the revolution of 50 years. Defend it like you have always done.”
