More Biogas Plants to Be Built in Eastern Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — Thirty-five biogas plants, mostly in swine facilities belonging to private producers, will be built in the eastern province of Holguin this year, reports the Granma newspaper.

Based on a Chinese design, the plants have been adapted to the conditions of Cuban producers, particularly considering the mass and volume of animal waste. The use of methane produced will focus on cooking food for human and animal consumption.

There are currently 32 operating biogas generators in Holguin, which provide about 8,750 cubic meters of methane each month and annually eliminate more than 38,560 kilograms of pollutant loads.

However, fossil fuels continue to be the main energy source on the Caribbean island, which seeks to expand its oil production through ongoing excavations in its platform.
