HAVANA TIMES, Nov. 4 – The funeral for Carmen Nordelo, the mother of Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo (Cuban Five), was held on Tuesday at Colon Cemetery in Havana with President Raul Castro in attendance.

Hernandez, is one of the Cuban Five, considered heroes of the Cuban Republic, and imprisoned in the US for over eleven years.  Their crime was having infiltrated terrorist organizations based in Miami to gather information on their plots against the island.

For his efforts to safeguard his country Gerardo was given two life sentences.

A review of the case against Hernandez and the other Cuban Five members, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez, Ramón Labañino Salazar, René González Sehwerert and Fernando González Llort, was refused earlier this year by the US Supreme Court.

Numerous human rights and juridical organizations from the US and around the world had asked the court to reopen the case due to the politically charged Miami trial where the defendants allegedly faced a biased court and were unable to see the supposed evidence against them for “national security” reasons.
