Nicaragua’s Civic Alliance Announces More Actions

In an assembly held on Tuesday with more than 50 leaders, the Civic Alliance set itself the goal of integrating more movements organizations and individuals in peaceful resistance that are committed to the establishment of a democracy in Nicaragua.

HAVANA TIMES – Five months after the protests against the Government of Nicaragua began, the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy announced in a statement that it will continue with the peaceful struggle throughout the country.

The Alliance reported that in an assembly held on Tuesday with more than 50 leaders, the Civic Alliance set itself the goal of integrating more movements, organizations and individuals in peaceful resistance that are committed to the establishment of a democracy.

“It has been five months of struggle for life, human rights and for a Nicaragua in democracy. In five months we have lost more than 400 brothers and sisters, they have imprisoned more than 250 Nicaraguans for political reasons, almost 3,000 people have been wounded or injured, more than 20,000 have emigrated against their will and they continue to repress us. However, the spirit of struggle and desire for freedom of our people remain intact,” the statement said.

One of the activities proposed by the Alliance is to articulate renewed territorial and national mobilization to counteract the new forms of government repression.

Once again the Alliance demanded an end to the government repression and the release of political prisoners abducted for raising their voices in protest, and insists on a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis.

In April, “fear was lost and the streets usurped by the regime recovered. The commitment was reaffirmed to build a Nicaragua with restored institutions with a separation of powers, with the right to choose and be elected in transparent processes, with the right to protest and peaceful demonstration, with freedom of expression and the right to think differently,” said the Civic Alliance.

“After five months of resistance, united, we will build a Nicaragua for all, in freedom, justice and democracy,” said the statement signed by 25 civic organizations. It ends by indicating that new protest actions will be announced in the coming days.
