Unique Cavern Discovered in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES, Dec. 7 — A unique cave, flooded with 30 meters of freshwater and having numerous corridors, was discovered on Tuesday by Cuban spelunkers outside of the town of Gibara, in the eastern province of Holguin.

“This is the first time we’ve seen chambers of these dimensions in flooded caverns,” said Arturo Rojas, from the speleological committee in the province. The researcher noted the sighting of specimens that included aquatic life such as blind fish and shrimp.

Participants in the exploration described the event as spectacular given the peculiarities of the discovery, which included the verticality of the entry shaft and the presence of multiple corridors proceeding all the way to the bottom and in different directions and varying degrees.
