Vietnamese Technology to Benefit Rice Production in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — The introduction of Vietnamese engineered technological improvements in the cultivation of rice has resulted in yield increases of 30 percent in areas where these were applied in the central Cuban province of Cienfuegos.

According to the Prensa Latina news agency, the new practices have increased productivity from four tons to as much as eight tons per hectare at the farms where the improvements have been made.

Among the improvements are new process in the leveling of soil, seed cooling, the planting of optimally sized shoots and the selection of the best days for transplanting seedlings.

The consolidation of the agreement between Cuba and the world’s second largest rice producer will reduce cereal imports to the island by millions of dollars annually.
