HAVANA TIMES — The World Boxing Council on Wednesday called for three days of mourning following the death of former Olympic champion Teofilo Stevenson on Monday, EFE reported.
The president of the institution, former Mexican boxer Jose Sulaiman, in a press communiqué considered the Cuban slugger the “greatest fighter in the history of amateur boxing.”
In Cuba, former president Fidel Castro published a short article in which he said that Stevenson “could have achieved another two Olympic titles had it not been for certain duties that the principles of internationalism imposed on the revolution.”
The wake and funeral for the legendary Cuban boxer was held on Tuesday in the presence of his family members, sports leaders, athletes, friends and admirers. Both of the Castro brothers and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez sent wreaths.
