Cuba Not Sold on Women’s Boxing

HAVANA TIMES, Aug. 20 – The Cuban Boxing Federation will not be sending a women’s boxing team to the London 2012 Olympic Games when the discipline debuts at the highest amateur level.

According to Jose Barrientos, president of the Federation, the island does not have a program for developing women’s boxing as it does not consider the sport appropriate for women, reported IPS.

For decades Cuba has been among the top medal earners in men’s Olympic boxing.

In a recent setback for Cuban Olympic competition, the International Olympic Committee voted not to consider a return of baseball – Cuba’s national sport – and softball at the 2016 Olympic Games.  The sports had their last go at Beijing 2008.
