Cuba Runner Wins Panama Marathon

HAVANA TIMES, Dec. 5 — Cuban distance runner Richard Perez won the Panama City Marathon yesterday with a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes and 50 seconds. The 42+ kilometer run takes place in areas near the Panama Canal on the Pacific Ocean side.

Perez came close to breaking the event record held by the Ethiopian runner Alene Reta. The event, attended by about a thousand athletes from 20 countries, included other Cuban runners such as Juan Carlos Mesa, Richard Perez and Castillo Yudileydis.

The annual competition’s awards totaled $60,000, and in addition a special $10,000 that was set aside for anyone setting a new record in the event.
