Matanzas Surprise Leader of the West in Cuban Baseball

HAVANA TIMES, Dec 13 — The team from Matanzas Province defeated Sancti Spiritus squad on Monday 7 to 2 and the two teams are now tied in front of the western division in the 2011-2012 Cuban baseball season that got underway at the end of November.

Matanzas players fired off 11 hits while their opponents committed a total of five errors, two by their starting pitcher Yunier Mendoza and the same number by the young player Lourdes Gourriel.

With six wins and four losses, Victor Mesa’s players have returned to their path of triumph.  Industriales is in third place with a 5-4 record followed Pinar del Rio, last year’s league champs, who are 5-6 thus far in the season.

In other games yesterday, Holguin defeated Artemisa 12 runs to 1, Mayabeque surprised Las Tunas with a 4 to 0 shutout, and Santiago de Cuba defeated Guantanamo 5 to 2.
