Constitution of New Cuban Parliament Announced

HAVANA TIMES — The Eighth Legislature of the National Assembly of People’s Power and the country’s leadership for the next five years will be formally installed on February 24, according to an official statement published today in the Granma newspaper.

The note from the Council of State indicated that the provincial assemblies will be constituted on Sunday, February 10, and will also function over a five year period.

All indications are that current president Raul Castro will again be ratified as the president of the Council of State, but discussion continues concerning the appointment of a new president of the parliament, since preceding president Ricardo Alarcon was not included in last Sunday’s elections.
