Disagreements in OAS over Cuba

HAVANA TIMES, May 28 – The Organization of American States (OAS) created a working group Wednesday to try to conciliate the proposals by the United States, Honduras and Nicaragua on Cuba’s possible return to that regional body, announced the president of the Permanent Council, Canadian Graeme Clark.

Cuba has repeatedly stated it is not interested in returning to the hemispheric organization from where it was expelled in 1962, considering it antiquated and submissive to US interests.

Nonetheless, numerous Latin American countries want the OAS to rescind the measure that suspended Cuba during tense times of the Cold War. The US is virtually alone in wanting to put pre-conditions on normalizing Cuba’s OAS status.
