Salvador Names Ambassador to Cuba

HAVANA TIMES, July 2 — Fresh after reestablishing diplomatic relations with Cuba, the Salvadoran government has designated Domingo Santacruz, a political science expert, as its ambassador to Havana.

Upon taking office on June 1, El Salvador’s President Mauricio Funes immediately announced a reestablishing of ties with Cuba broken off in 1962 when the United States succeeded in getting all of Latin American except Mexico to break relations with Cuba.

Today, the only county in the America’s without normal relations with Cuba is the United States, which maintains a half century economic blockade on the neighboring island nation. US citizens are also prohibited from visiting Cuba without special Treasury Dept. permission.

The announcement of the new ambassador was made by Funes’ foreign minister, Hugo Martinez, reported IPS.
