Cuba Denies Military Presence in Venezuela
HAVANA TIMES – The Cuban government on Thursday denied allegations by the United States and Venezuela’s opposition that Cuban troops have been stationed in Venezuela and are advising the country’s army, reported dpa news.
“Cuba does not have troops nor does it have soldiers in … Venezuela,” Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said at a press conference in Havana.
“It is a vulgar calumny that I again deny,” the minister said, calling on the US to provide evidence of the allegations.
Cuba has admitted it has over 20,000 professionals, mostly doctors, health workers and educators, working in the South American country on a government to government agreement that facilitates cheap oil to Havana and staffs social services for Venezuela.
Washington has blamed Venezuela’s political and economic crisis partly on Cuba, saying support from Havana has helped President Nicolas Maduro stay in power.
The support of the Venezuelan army has also allowed Maduro to remain at the helm.
Dozens of countries have sided with opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is pressuring the president to resign.
Eduardo Stein, the joint representative of the UN refugee agency UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration for Venezuelan migrants, meanwhile said that about 5,000 people are leaving Venezuela daily to flee the deep crisis.
If that rhythm is maintained, more than 5 million Venezuelans will have emigrated by the end of the year, Stein said at a joint press conference with Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo in Bogota.
Colombia alone has received more than 1 million Venezuelans fleeing hyperinflation, food and medicine shortages and political unrest.
Stein and Holmes Trujillo called on the international community to step up its financial support to countries receiving Venezuelan migrants.

It is best described as ‘willful blindness’ Brad. There is little if anything to choose between the two forms of dictatorship, fascism and communism. Both are motivated by the lust for power and control. But within these pages in the past, I have expressed my detestation of both – but others will only criticize fascism in their support for left wing totalitarian methods.

Well Curt the Castro totalitarian regime (Raul as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba still holds precedence over Diaz-Canel as President of the Council of Ministers) has continually blamed the embargo as responsible for its own incompetence and mismanagement. For some twenty seven years they have annually trotted out their resolution in front of the UN receiving a majority of 189 – 2. (Israel has not forgiven Cuba for aiding Syria in it’s invasion of Israel known in history as the Yum Kippur War). Raul being street smart has now produced his “new” constitution replacing the words communist and communism with socialist and socialism even having the gall to introduce the word democratic. but also retaining the PCC as the only party in a one party state. Cuba is NOT a democratic socialist state that claim is bogus, it is a communist dictatorship. But Raul has managed to fool some – like the EU’s somewhat innocent Italian Foreign Minister, that Cuba has changed. That, as anyone who really knows Cuba will agree, is misinformation of the first order. Cuba remains a communist dictatorship on par with North Korea and Cubans still have to daily consider how they are going to get by tomorrow! The private sector in Cuba is tiny with restrictions imposed upon growth of the individual business. My views upon the embargo have not changed, nor have the views I expressed in ‘Cuba Lifting the Veil’ about the US.
BTW Brad do you actually think the Trump Administration is imposing these sanctions because they care about the Cuban and Venezuelan people? Hell No, it’s about the 28 electoral votes in Florida!
I never said that Cuba and Venezuela are “sweet democracies”. However that does not justify the CRUEL sanctions that the corrupt Trump Administration is imposing on Cuba and Venezuela. The US has been bullying Cuba for 60 years and any moron should realize the embargo doesn’t work. I really don’t like Maduro very much but the latest sanctions against Venezuela will only make the people more hungry and desperate. Maduro and his clan won’t go hungry and will not affect them in any way. As far as Cuba goes, private businesses are gradually increasing, but the latest sanctions against remittances will are deplorable and will destroy the private sector in Cuba along with the coming travel restrictions. Hopefully Cuban Americans will figure a way to get around remittances and have multiple people sending them instead of 1 person.
