Fidel Castro Presents Historic Book

HAVANA TIMES, August 3 — Former President Fidel Castro presented the book “Por todos los caminos de la Sierra: La Victoria estratégica” (All roads lead to the Sierra: The Strategic victory) which compiles the story of the offensive of the army of Fulgencio Batista against the guerrilla forces he led in the summer of 1958.   The events covered were the prelude to the counter offensive that would take Castro to power in January 1959, reported IPS.

  • I just assumed that everyone would get the humor of the anecdote. Apparently, this assumption was incorrect. For anyone who does not understand, the anecdote relates how Che “thought” at the time that Fidel must be crazy to have such optimism in such a disastrous circumstance.

  • One of my favorite anecdotes about Fidel was told by Che. I’ll repeat it from memory and hope to tell it correctly.

When the Granma landed the rebels had been betrayed, and the men were strafed by Batista’s air force. The band was severely decimated, but Fidel, Che and some others escaped into a cane field. They lay motionless under the cane, hoping not to be seen by the pilots who were trying to wipe them out. Che inched his way through the cane, and finally came up close to where Fidel was hiding. When their eyes met, Fidel said, “The days of the Batista dictatorship are numbered.” Che said this was when he realized that Fidel . . . was crazy.
