Cuba Sweeps in Judo Tournament
HAVANA TIMES, April 5 — Cuba ended up with six gold medals on Wednesday in the international Judoguis Golden and Jose Ramon Rodriguez Memorial judo tournaments held in Havana, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.
Only the Italian athlete Giulia Cantoni was able to make it to the finals to contest for a gold, but relented in the end of the 70 kilogram classification to host-team member Onix Cortes, who won by one ippon. Meanwhile Yurisleidis Lupetey (57 km) dominated in the women’s bouts.
The remaining medals were hung on the chests of Yaritza Abel, the king of Guadalajara in the 2011 Pan-American games, at 63 kilos; while in the men’s contests the Cuba winners consisted of Angelo Gomez, Ronald Girones and Osmay Cruz, who dominated in 60, 66 and 81 kilogram weight classifications respectively.
Both events conclude tomorrow with disputes for titles in the women’s 48 km, 52 km and free style competitions and in the 60 km contest for men.
