Cubans Intercepted by Authorities in Colombia
HAVANA TIMES, April 20 — A group of six Cubans were discovered on Wednesday by Colombian authorities in waters off the coast as they were being transported by three nationals on a boat headed towards the Panamanian border.
According to information released yesterday by the newspaper El Heraldo, the Cubans had entered Colombia illegally and are now in the custody of immigration authorities of that country, while the Colombian nationals will be prosecuted for the trafficking of illegal immigrants.
In recent weeks, another fifteen Cubans were found by Colombian authorities when they were attempting to follow the same route “to continue their illegal journey to Central America,” read a statement from the Coast Guard.
Most Cubans seek to reach the United States where they are welcomed with a fast track to legal residency and assistance.
