Cuban Computer University Graduates Its First 10,000 Students
HAVANA TIMES — The “University of Information Sciences” (UCI), the youngest institution of higher education in Cuba, will reach 10,000 thousand graduates since its creation a decade ago, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.
According to Vice Chancellor Ernesto Garcia, 2,000 students will graduate in July at its Havana campus, to which another 400 students will be added who have completed their studies in the cities of Artemis, central Ciego de Avila, and Manzanillo on the eastern side of the island.
According to the news article, the university has no official date of foundation but took on December 12 since this was the first time former president Fidel Castro spoke with students there.
Despite efforts to train significant numbers of computer scientists, public Internet access continues to be restricted by the Cuban government and operates at very low speeds for the few who do have access.
