Cuba’s Chapman Pitched in All Star Game

HAVANA TIMES — Aroldis Chapman, the towering left-handed pitcher from Holguin, was the only Cuban in yesterday’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game. He got a chance to realize any player’s dream when he entered the game in the eighth inning.

Chapman, with a 103 mph fastball, entered the game with two out and nobody on base at the Kansas City stadium.  He went to a full count and walked Mike Trout before striking out Mark Trumbo to end the inning and his performance.

The game was one sided from the start with the National League winning by a score of 8-0. The visitors scored five times in the first inning, led by a three-run triple from Venezuelan Pablo Sandoval.

The other three runs came in the fourth, including a two-run homer by Dominican Melky Cabrera, who was voted the game’s MVP.

The Cuban media did not report on Chapman’s participation in the game, since its policy is to totally ignore Major League Baseball.
