Cuban Film ‘Juan of the Dead’ a Goya Nominee
HAVANA TIMES — The satirical zombie film Juan de los muertos (Juan of the Dead), directed by Alejandro Brugues, is the Cuban candidate for a nomination in the category “Best Latin American Film” at the 27th Goya Awards ceremony in Spain.
According to the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), a committee from the island chose Brugues’s film and also selected the movie Larga Distancia, by Esteban Insausti, as a hopeful for the Ariel Award Prize, which is awarded by the Mexican Academy of Cinema.
Juan of the Dead is the most successful recent film among Cuban cinema audiences. It has been exhibited in over 30 international film festivals and has won awards such as the Audience Award at Fantastic Fest, in the US; the Fanomenon Audience Award, at the Leeds International Film Festival in the United Kingdom; and the Audience Award at the last New Latin American Cinema Festival in Havana.
