UK Firm to Invest $50 Million on Bio-generator in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — The AZCUBA sugar industry business group and the British firm Havana Energy Ltd, have created a company to build the first 30 megawatt electric generating plant in Cuba running off of biomass. This information emerged last week during the Havana International Trade Fair.

The joint venture will invest between $45 and $55 million dollars on the first plant near the Ciro Redondo sugar mill in the province of Ciego de Avila. The operation should start generating electricity in early 2015.

Havana Energy president and former British energy minister, Brian Wilson, showed his satisfaction when he learned that the agreement had been approved. He revealed that the concept to form this project began three years ago.

According to a press statement read by Pedro Camilo Hernandez, the president of AZCUBA, the island “currently has a low percentage of its energy needs supplied by renewable sources, therefore the government is working to increase that proportion.”
