Raul Castro to Attend Summit in Chile

HAVANA TIMES – Raul Castro’s participation in the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), which will take place from 26 to 28 January 2013 in Chile, was confirmed on Thursday.

According to sources in the presidential palace La Moneda in Chile, Havana has assured that the Cuban president will be present.

This will be the first visit of the Cuban President to the South American country, and on the occasion he will receive Cuba’s presidency of the Latin American community, held until the last day of the Summit by Chile.

A total of 45 presidents from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe are expected at the summit.

  • Raul may be in for a warm welcome in Chile:

    “Judicial Action Against Raul Castro Planned in Chile

    According to the internet site “biobiochile.cl,” Chilean party officials of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) and National Renovation (RN) are looking into either filing judicial action against Raul Castro or ordering him to answer questions when he visits Chile at the end of January.

    Havana has already confirmed the attendance of Castro at the summit between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), which will take place on January 26 through the 28th.

    During the summit, Chilean president Sebastian Piñera will handover the pro tempore presidency of CELAC to Raul Castro.

    The judicial action planned by the UDI and the RN are based on the alleged connections between the Cuban leader and the assassination of Jaime Guzman, the founder of UDI.

    The Secretary Generals of both parties, parliament members Jose Antonio Kast (UDI) and Mario Desbordes (RN), said they were worried and confused by the Castro visit.

    Kast explained to the press that the intention was to bring Raul Castro in for questioning over his suspected connections with the Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front and their assassination of senator Jaime Guzman in 1991.”

  • So Raul’s headed to Chile? (Big yawn) Given the current economic climate in Europe, this summit will likely see a reversal of roles between Latin America and Europe. This time Latin America is buying and the EU is hoping to sell. The EU badly needs fresh Latin American capital investment. Raul has nothing to offer the Europeans. Besides, who cares what he has to say after Mexico’s Pena Nieto and Brazil’s Rousseff have spoken. Okay, once they give him the microphone he will likely go with the 54-year old US-bashing stuff but he could just send a video of one of his (or his brother’s) earlier speeches and save the airfare. Assuming Chavez will still be in Cuba recuperating, the heir to the anti-imperialist throne goes to Correa from Ecuador so most of what Castro would say will be redundant to Correa’s remarks anyway. The only real reason Raul has to attend this summit is to host a “pity party” to continue to sell the “poor lil’ mistreated Cuba” image. When he gets back to Cuba with a few more coins he picked up by passing his hat around, nothing will have changed.

  • So Raul Castro, Mariela Castro and many of the Castro oligarchy clan can travel abroad but Yoani Sanchez and Rosa Maria Paya cannot travel to Chile? What are Raul and Fidel so afraid of? Young, skinny, smart women phobia?

    The Cuban government denied the request Tuesday of opposition movement leader Rosa María Payá to leave the country to study in Chile.
