Havana’s Teatro Martí Reopens in November

HAVANA TIMES – The landmark Teatro Martí in Havana, will reopen in November, after nearly 40 years closed to the public, announced the Office of the Historian of Havana.

The building “was practically a ruin of which only the facade was preserved” in 2005, so it has since been subjected to a “comprehensive restoration process,” said Marilyn Mederos, developer of the work.

The work includes a new tower for the props, stage mechanics, lighting, dressing rooms and facilities for artists, fire prevention system, and air conditioning, in areas not covered in the original nineteenth century.

The Teatro Martí is considered one of the cradles of authentic Cuban bufo theater. Founded in 1884, it is considered a top priority for protection, due to its historic and neoclassical architectural value.
