Cuban Pole-Vaulter Obtains Silver in Poland Event
HAVANA TIMES — Cuban pole-vaulter Lazaro Borges surpassed the 5.70 meter mark in Plock, Poland in the Orlen Cup, where he won a silver medal, Granma newspaper reported.
Borges needed two attempts to win his first three 5.25-5.45-5.65 heights, while he made the 5.70 on the third try, surpassed only by Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany with 5.80 meters.
This is the best result for Borges since the 2011 season, which ended with his record of 5.80 at the Guadalajara Pan American Games and a gold medal.
The win coincided with the athlete’s 27th birthday. In 2012 he barely reached 5.60 and at the current World Cup preparation for Moscow 2013, had exhibited only 5.50.
