El Salvador Leaves US Alone on Cuba
HAVANA TIMES, June 1 — The new president of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, is expected to announce today during his inauguration the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, announced Hugo Martínez, deputy of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), which will now govern the Central American nation.
Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo heads the island’s official delegation to the inauguration ceremony to be attended by many Latin American leaders. Lazo will sign the agreements that reestablish ties between Havana and San Salvador.
After diplomatic relations are restored between El Salvador and Cuba, the United States will be the only country in the hemisphere without official ties with Cuba.
Hundreds of Salvadoran young people are currently studying medicine in Cuba and collaboration between the two countries will undoubtedly receive a boost under the Funes government.
