Hillary vs. Latin America at OAS
HAVANA TIMES, June 2 – The United States will not back Cuba’s return to the Organization of American States (OAS), since this includes obeying the principles of democracy and human rights established in the charter, said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday.
The Cuban government has also expressed on several occasions its disinterest in returning to the OAS, calling it a spent body that has proven highly submissive to US interests.
Nonetheless, several Latin American leaders plan to press the issue at the OAS meeting that begins today in San Pedro de Sula, Honduras. Their position is to take away any impediment for Cuba’s reentry to the 34-nation body, if it so desires.
A 23 vote, two-thirds majority, is needed to pass a resolution that would leave the Obama administration in the minority.
