I’ve been a member of ACFLIM (Cuban Association for the Physically Disabled) for years, but no one had informed me of a number of important things till recently. Now that I do, I will be able to demand my rights and, better, inform others of theirs.
Almost everyone likes to follow fashion. Fashion is constantly changing, recycling styles that were popular in the past or setting new trends. This diversity makes it easy for the fashion industry to lure people with very different tastes. In Cuba, we are not immune to these fluctuations.
Some time ago, when I was interviewed by the Havana Times, I spoke of my disability and shared some of my experiences and aspirations. Today, like back then, the most pressing problem I face is my housing situation and the repercussions this has on my health and quality of life.
Being a mother has been the greatest, most beautiful experience of my life. I feel proud of the sacrifices – both joyful and sad – that I’ve had to make over these past 12 years, trying to give my Carlos Adriel the best, shield him from the worst and give him a childhood happier than the one I had.
Some days ago, I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in a very long time. From the clothes he was wearing and the accent he spoke with, I immediately realized he was now living abroad. We sat down together to catch up. We told stories, asked each other questions, laughed.
