Dutch Bank Booted from Cuba

Cuban authorities decided to cancel the operating license of the Dutch bank ING Barinas and the mixed enterprise comprised of the bank and Cuba under the name of Netherlands Caribbean Bank N.V., informed the Central Bank of Cuba. The closure was justified by the fact that ING Barinas has for some time stopped carrying out business on the island.

A group of 174 medical specialists in genetics, psychopedagogy, neurophysiology and other disciplines will soon join 62 other Cuban doctors working since July in Ecuador. Cuba has tens of thousands of doctors working on short and long term missions mainly in Latin American, Caribbean and African countries.

Havana Private Taxis to Get Permits

The Cuban government will begin issuing on Friday licenses for private passenger and cargo transportation, suspended 10 years ago. Many of the collective taxis in the capital are either 1950s US made cars or later models made in the former Soviet Union.

Business delegations from Cuba and Guatemala began today a meeting in the Central American country to explore business opportunities, reported IPS. The 3rd International Forum “Children and their audiovisual universe,” will take place in the Cuban capital in the framework of the New Latin American Havana Film Festival next December 2-11, reported IPS.
The event seeks to promote “a culture of peace that contributes to the eradication of all types of discrimination by way of the production of educational audiovisual materials for children and adolescents.”

The European Commission delivered 11.7 million euros to strengthen local food production capacities, improve agricultural management and the availability of food products in 27 Cuban municipalities, reported IPS. US Orthopedic Docs Trip to Cuba Nixed

The U.S. government did not authorize a delegation of US orthopedists’ trip to Cuba to participate in the International Congress of Orthopedics and Traumatology, to be held September 21-26 in the eastern Cuban city of Bayamo. The US government routinely blocks scientific, educational and cultural exchange between Cuba and the United States.
