Havana Times Photo Contest Winners

Havana Times held its first photo contest during the months of October-January. Twenty-six persons sent in a total of 118 photographs. From those our jury selected 16 semifinalists, 7 finalists, a special mention and the two prize winners. We will leave the 16 semifinalists as a permanent gallery on our photo page. Many of the other photos submitted will get used in the future in HT with credit given to the photographer.

Eating On The Run

Despite the information and messages broadcast in the main Cuban media about good hygiene and nutrition, Cubans don’t escape the indiscriminate consumption of products they purchase while out on the streets. While there are some fresh juices for sale, the majority of things sold have few nutrients and a lot of calories. You can see images like these every day on the streets of the capital.

Sara Gonzalez and her Peña

The last Sunday of each month Sara Gonzalez invites her friends and the public to her intimate El Jardin de la Gorda peña. She says, “The songs never get old as long as people remember them and have them present in their lives.”
During the January peña, Marta Campos, with her eternal smile, sang Vengo de lejos, cansada de amar (I’ve come from far, tired of loving), but everyone knows it was a game, she didn’t look tired.

Cuban National Ballet Special

Caridad was on the scene to capture the grace of Cuba’s top ballet artists. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of a performance back in 1959 when the Alicia Alonso Ballet Company, forerunner of the Cuban National Ballet, danced to welcome the new government and Rebel Army.

Havana Chinatown & Lunar New Year

The Spring Festival was celebrated in Havana’s Chinatown to welcome the Lunar New Year. There were demonstrations of Wu Shu, Tai Chi Shuan, dances and some combat exercises in which teachers and students of all ages participated from the Cuban Wu Shu School.

African Culture Day

La Casa de Africa museum in Old Havana is a cultural institution that showcases African roots, which, united with the Spanish, conform much of the Cuban national culture. The institution was founded on January 6, 1986 and has a vast collection of ethnography from the African continent.
