China Interested in Cuba’s Mariel Development Zone

HAVANA TIMES – ??Representatives of the Center for the Promotion of International Trade and the China Development Bank expressed interest in establishing Chinese factories at the Mariel Special Development Zone, at a seminar hosted by Cuban authorities Wednesday in Beijing.

According to Prensa Latina, Chinese executives in the automotive industries, pharmaceutical, HVAC equipment and biotechnology, sought more details on setting up a factory on the island.

Rodrigo Malmierca, head of the portfolio of Foreign Trade and Investment, referred to “the guarantees to foreign investors, the free transfer abroad of dividends and profits and a special tax incentives.”

According to the Cuban official, the Mariel Development Zone is the most complex project undertaken in Cuba in half a century, and said that Chinese companies have the potential to settle there .
