Radio & TV Marti Criticize Cardinal Ortega

HAVANA TIMES, May 7 — Radio and Television Marti, based in Florida, criticized Havana Archbishop Jaime Ortega on Thursday for his recent statements concerning 13 people who took over a Catholic church on the island in March, just before the Pope’s visit to the island.

The statement by the sources financied by the US government called the position of Ortega expressed at Harvard University as one of “a lackey, and also demonstrating a profound lack of understanding and compassion for the human situations of these children of God.”

The position of the Cuban cardinal — who described the opposition members who illegally seized the building as “criminals and (people of) low cultural levels” — was a source of controversy, anger and criticism by some individuals and groups within and outside the island. He was applauded by others.
