A Visit to Guama, Matanzas

HAVANA TIMES — Last weekend, my family and I decided to visit the Cienaga de Zapata, a large wetland located in southern Matanzas. We got a good breath of fresh air and saw many beautiful landscapes during the two-hour trip to the Guama tourist complex.
After so many years since our last trip there, I wanted my family to revisit the place, tour the Laguna del Tesoro (“Treasure Lake”) and see the Hotel Guama again, where my kids could get to know the works of the renowned Cuban sculptor Rita Longa and about the lives of the Taino aboriginals who once populated the area.
I recall that, years ago, one made the trip on a boat and that tickets were in Cuban pesos. Things have since changed. Today, the round trip costs 5 CUC per person, and the ride (on speedboats) lasts 10 minutes. You spend half an hour in the place and then go back. Such a visit proves rather unaffordable for many Cubans who would doubtless like to know more about this culture and visit this beautiful place. It is quite accessible, on the other hand, to foreign tourists. Yet another item for the long list of mistakes in Cuba.
