Camerata Romeu Plays Tango

HAVANA TIMES, March 8 – The world renowned, all-female chamber orchestra Camerata Romeu offered a perfect concert for Havana lovers of the tango this past Saturday, March 6.

Antonio Peruch, a classical Italian accordionist who resides in Canada, had dreamed for ages of playing in concert with this group founded 16 years ago and directed by Zenaida Romeu.

This musician typically proposes works in which he adds tango forms and techniques to scores by Bach.  With him is usually presented Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman, who also has a passion for the musical creations of Astor Piazzolla.

They were the perfect soloists to interpret works by Daniel Binelli and Astor Piazolla, as well as a few by Allan Guilliland, who was there at Amadeo Roldan Theater and received an ovation from a public moved by his world premiering of “Concierto para acordeón y orquesta de cuerdas.”

The young women of the Camerata exhibited their customary virtuosity in interpreting “Paris desde aquí,” “Tango de los Cuadros” and “Melodia en La menor.”

The concert closed with the composition “Aconcagua,” in which Peruch and Ferman shared the stage with guest performers Lianne Lastre (on percussion, primarily the timpani), Yuliet Abreu (percussion) and Mirtha Ruth Batista (harp), all under the outstanding direction of Zenaida Romeu.
