Cuban Blogger Wins Prize in US
HAVANA TIMES, July 28 – Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez obtained one of the medals of the 2009 Maria Moors Cabot Prize, awarded by Columbia University, reported IPS. Sanchez, a 34-year-old philologist known for her acrid criticism of the island’s government, is the author of the Generation Y blog, which cannot be seen in Cuba.
Sanchez is sharply criticized by pro-government Cuban journalists for having funding sources and allies in the US and Europe that are considered enemies of the Cuban revolution. While she has never been formally arrested she claims to be under constant surveillance.
Sanchez has won several other awards and was named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2008.
Havana Times did not participate in the contest.
Dear Havana Times:
Please note that Yoani has won the Special Citation, not one of the Gold Medals. Thank you,

You know why this blog will never be honor by any one? Because servers the interest of the oppressors of the Cuban people. If you are silence in front of injustice you contribute to that injustice. Someone call this blog Havana Times but the time this blog keeps is completely out of synch with the needs of the Cuban people and marking the ticks of the dying regime of the Castro brothers
