Book Fair Cultural Program Feb.12-21
Irina Echarry
HAVANA TIMES, Feb. 10 — The cultural relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union created ties that are difficult to undo, though it’s been almost 20 years since that unity has received a new stimulus. The 19th Cuba International Book Fair will provide a new meeting with Russian culture, appealing and longed for by the Cuban public.
Russia, the guest country of honor at this 2010 edition of the fair, is bringing a sizable delegation of writers and artists. Its representatives will include the Bolshoi Ballet and the Moscow Circus Company, recognized artists such as Evgueny Polikanin, the vocal pop opera group Kvatro, jazz artists from the Igor Butman workshop, as well as chamber musicians Galina Petrova, Maxim Fedotov; and Vladimir Ziva, the orchestra director who has visited the island on other occasions.
In the mornings, the circus will set up under Havana’s Trompoloco big top, and in the evenings that site will turn into a youth disco with the participation of Cuban and Russian DJs such as Mikhail Grebenschikov.
The official inauguration of the fair takes place on Thursday, February 11, at 6:00 p.m. Among the guests will be a symphonic orchestra made up of more than 80 young people from the Amadeo Roldan conservatory, where they will perform Russian music with the participation of two Russian musicians.
