Guantanamo Shakes from 5.6 Tremor

HAVANA TIMES, March 20 — An earthquake with a 5.6 magnitude struck near Guantanamo, Cuba on Saturday at 2:08 p.m. reported Cubadebate.cu.  No injuries or serious structural damage was reported.

The epicenter of the quake was located by the US Geological Service at 43 kilometers (27 miles) southwest of Guantanamo and 22 kilometers (14 miles) deep.

Locals said it felt like the ground shook for what seemed a long time, “Maybe it was only a minute, but to us it lasted a long time,” said Nuria Alonso from Guantanamo city.

The quake was also felt in the City of Santiago de Cuba, 57 km (36 miles) from the epicenter, where people were alarmed and many ran out into the street.

Eastern Cuba is accostumed to tremors although they are usually of a lesser magnitude.
