UN Body Reviews Cuba’s Human Rights Situation
HAVANA TIMES, Feb. 5 – Representatives of Cuba and dozens of countries participated in discussion Wednesday on the current human rights situation on the island, after Cuba presented its report on this issue to the Universal Periodic Review mechanism of the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council.
While the vast majority had positive remarks about the island’s human rights record, there were diverging opinions in the session on the freedom of movement and the existence of political prisoners, among other questions.
The conclusions of the review should be made public on February 9. For readers wanting detailed information on the discussion click on: http://www.ohchr.org/EN/HRBodies/UPR/Pages/Highlights5February2009pm.aspx
