Population Growth Declining in Cuba
HAVANA TIMES, Jan 3 — Cuba started 2012 with just over 11,240,000 inhabitants, an amount similar to that in early 2011, according to estimates published by the National Bureau of Statistics and Information.
The lack of growth is caused by low levels of fertility on the island, according to the Agencia Cubana de Informacion, while experts say population decline could become visible in an accelerated aging of the population. Another key factor is emigration abroad.
The expected trend reveals a clear case of population decline on the island, currently characterized by a prevalence of male members, a situation that will remain until at least 2020.
