Most Land Grants Now Producing
HAVANA TIMES, Jan 6 — About 80 percent of the land recently leased to individual farmers in Cuba is now in use for food production, said a senior official of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Over 3.4 million acres have now been transferred. Most of this land had been infested by the weed-like marabou plants (sicklebush) but is now devoted mainly to livestock and various crops, according to the Cuban News Agency.
The Cuban government has taken steps to maximize the exploitation of these lands, including the suspension of the rights of some beneficiaries to exploit these areas due their neglect of the land they received or low productivity.
