Ecuador Confirms Boycott of Summit of the Americas

HAVANA TIMES, April 3 — Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa indicated that his country would not be attending the upcoming Summit of the Americas. His official position was expressed in a letter to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who is hosting the regional event.

“It is unacceptable that these summits circumvent such fundamental issues as the inhuman blockade against Cuba and the aberrant colonization of the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands, though these have generated almost unanimous disapproval by the world’s nations,” emphasized the president.

Correa said that he had protested the exclusion of Cuba from the event at the previous summit held in Trinidad and Tobago in 2009.

The countries of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) failed to reach a common position, despite having initially pressed for the inclusion of Cuba at the conclave to be held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on April 14 and 15.
