Cuba Isn’t Banking on US Tourism

HAVANA TIMES, April 1 — Cuban authorities are preparing for international tourism in general and maintain their calculations for 2009, which don’t include a possible avalanche of visitors from the United States, reported IPS on Tuesday.

The upcoming Easter Week is a favorite for visiting the island along with the peak winter months and summer vacations. Over 2.3 million tourists came to Cuba in 2008.

This week the US Congress will discuss a bill that would repeal the ban on US citizens to travel to Cuba, in place for most of the last fifty years.

One reason for the lack of enthusiasm is that over the last decades numerous pieces of legislation to do away with the travel ban have either died in legislative committees, failed to rally a majority, or were set aside when faced with a veto threat from the chief executive.
