US Coast Guard Repatriates 55 Cubans

HAVANA TIMES, May 14 — The US Coast Guard repatriated 55 Cubans and 37 Haitians who were intercepted at sea on their way to South Florida, said US authorities over the weekend.

According to a report in the El Nuevo Herald, Cubans had been intercepted during the previous seven days aboard five different vessels in various parts of the Florida Strait and were returned to Bahia de Cabanas in Cuba.

The US “wet-foot/dry-foot policy” allows Cubans to stay in the US with a fast-track to permanent residency if they manage to reach American soil, but generally repatriates them back to the island if they are intercepted at sea.
