US Lawyers Seek Dismissal of Cuban Five Conviction

HAVANA TIMES — Renowned US lawyers on Monday demanded the dismissal of the convictions against the five Cuban intelligence officers convicted in that country, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

In Washington, lawyers Martin Garbus, Raymond Steckle and former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark criticized the payment of thousands of dollars by the government to journalists to generate a hostile environment against the Cuban Five to influence the jury and the Miami community during their trial 12 years ago.

The “Five” (Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez) were arrested in 1998 for monitoring violent exile groups based in Miami that were opposed to the Cuban government, highlighted the article.
