US Obstructs Delivery of Funds to the Cuban Council of Churches

HAVANA TIMES — An Ecuadorian bank headquartered in Miami, Florida, was forced by the US government to block the delivery of $101,000 to the Cuban Council of Churches from the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI).

According to Cubaencuentro, the funds were being provided by the General Assembly of CLAI, and were scheduled to be transferred to Havana in February.

“This is not the first time Cuban churches have suffered from such actions because of the US blockade,” said Cuban Council president Joel Ortega at a news conference. He announced that the Cuban church organization would collect funds to support the event financially.

Meanwhile, CLAI president Julio Munray said the incident represents a “threat” to religious freedom.
