Cuba Begins Independence Cup in Boxing with Wins
HAVANA TIMES — The debut of Cuba in the Independence Boxing Cup being held in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, was marked by the triumph of the Olympic champion Roniel Iglesias, the Jit website reported.
In the match on Monday, which also proved to be his international debut as a welterweight, Antonio Iglesias defeated Puerto Rican fighter Ortiz by a 18-9 decision.
Meanwhile Cuban boxers Yosbani Veitia (49 kg.), Yasniel Toledo (64 kg.) and Ivan Oñate (60 kg.) debuted with victories on Tuesday in the second round of the Cup, according to a report from the Radio Havana Cuba website.
The second series of matches for these four fighters will be held today. Likewise, Cuban fighters Julio Cesar La Cruz (81 kg) and Yasiel Despaigne (75 kg) will be debuting, while the other Cuban present in the combat — super-heavyweight Erislandi Savon — will battle tomorrow.
