Cuba Makes Gold Cup Quarterfinals

2013_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup.svgHAVANA TIMES — Cuba picked up its first win in the 2013 Gold Cup soccer event on Tuesday and the 4-0 margin over Belize was just enough to earn it a place in the quarterfinals.

Cuba needed a four goal victory to edge Martinique on points and got three shots from Ariel Martinez and one from Jeniel Molina to accomplish it.  The Cubans finished the first round with a 1-2 record having lost 3-0 to Costa Rica and 4-1 to the USA.

Martinez left footed goals came at minutes 38, 63 and he scored from the right at minute 84. The final determining goal came from Molina at 90+2 in penalty time.

Cuba now faces Panama on July 20th in the one game do-or-die with the winner advancing to the semifinals.

The other six teams making it to the quarterfinals are: Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, USA, El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica.
