US Won’t Undermine Chances for Release of Gross

The U.S. government will not take any actions that will undermine the chances for the release of Alan Gross, the U.S. contractor sentenced on March 13 to 15 years in prison in Cuba for Acts against the Independence and Territorial Integrity of the State, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton affirmed in statements to the Telemundo television network. Clinton said that Gross should be released at the very least on humanitarian terms.

The Cuban authorities granted 171,000 new licenses to persons interested in private work on the island, in some of the 178 activities approved since October 2010, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security reported. That figure represents more than double the independent labor force that existed prior to the labor reform.

Prosecution Presents Fax Incriminating Posada

The prosecutor’s office presented a fax allegedly signed by Luis Posada Carriles that relates him to the terrorist attacks on Cuban tourist installations in 1997. The document had been objected to by the defense, but Judge Kathleen Cardone finally accepted its presentation. Posada is accused of lying to the U.S. immigration authorities after he illegally entered the US in 2005. His trial is taking place in El Paso, Texas.
