Pope Benedict XVI on Monday called on Cubans “to build a renewed and open society,” on the first day of his much-anticipated visit to the Caribbean nation. An estimated 100,000 people, many of them waving white handkerchiefs, gathered for mass at the Santiago de Cuba Revolution Square.

Internet Down for Some Cubans

The Cubarte network, one of the governmental institutions charged with providing access to the Intranet, Internet and email on the island, reported today that its users are experiencing difficulties with Internet browsing that will continue throughout the visit of Pope Benedict XVI (March 26-28).
