Peruvian president-elect Ollanta Humala, arrived early Tuesday to Cuba for a working visit that includes meeting with Cuban President Raul Castro.

The 42nd Venecemos Brigade of US citizens has arrived in Cuba to offer their support and challenge the half-century US blockade on the island. The group of 37 members, mostly young people coming to Cuba for the first time, will be doing volunteer work and also get a firsthand look at life on the island.

Tropical Storm Bret gained in strength on Monday afternoon and is now close to hurricane status with 100 kph (62 mph) as it moves north-northeast away from the Bahamas and deeper into the Atlantic.

Cuba’s weather experts note that Tropical Storm Bret has formed off the eastern coast of Florida and northwest of the Bahamas and do not see it posing any threat to Cuba.
